Franks Diner: The Heart of Downtown Kenosha Since 1926

In Downtown Kenosha sits a historic gem: Franks Diner, a beloved spot with a rich history, famous “Garbage Plates,” and a vibe that keeps locals and visitors coming back for more. Owned by Kevin and Julie Ervin since 2010, Franks Diner is more than just a place to grab a bite – it’s a community institution with nearly a century of stories to tell.

A Diner with a Story

Franks Diner was born in 1924 when Anthony Franks purchased the diner from the Jerry O’Mahoney Company in New Jersey. The diner, built from scratch and shipped on a flatbed train car, was placed on 58th Street in 1925, where it has remained ever since. However, the doors didn’t open until 1926 due to local objections, as city leaders thought there were too many Greek-owned restaurants in town at the time.

Fast forward to 2010, Kevin and Julie, longtime regulars and friends of the previous owners, Chris Schwartz and Lynn Groleau, took over the diner. What began as casual conversations between friends over drinks led them to purchase this iconic spot, preserving its legacy.

Keeping the Menu Classic

Since taking over, Kevin and Julie have kept Franks Diner’s menu largely the same, honoring the diner’s roots while adding a few new weekend specials. “We really haven’t changed much,” says Kevin. “The only things we’ve added are some different weekend specials from time to time. Otherwise, it’s the same good food people have loved for years.”

The menu might stay classic, but creativity in the kitchen is alive and well. With an open-door policy for staff to contribute ideas, Kevin and Julie encourage their team to try new dishes. “Josh [Fugate] is great at making soups, and our team has some fantastic breakfast ideas. We all collaborate,” Kevin explains.

What Sets Franks Apart

Franks Diner isn’t just another restaurant; it’s the oldest diner of its type in the world and the longest continuously running diner in the U.S. Beyond its rich history, Franks is known for its “sassy” atmosphere, scratch-made food, and legendary Garbage Plates. These plates are a fan favorite, starting with a base of hash browns, onions, green peppers, and a choice of meats, cheeses, and vegetables, all topped off with eggs and homemade toast. It’s an indulgent dish that’s become synonymous with Franks Diner.

But what really makes Franks special is its sense of community. “In Kenosha, being smaller, you get to meet the city leaders, and you see them out and about,” Kevin shares. “It makes you feel connected to the city.”

The Franks Family

A key to Franks Diner’s success is its staff. Kevin speaks fondly of his team, from seasoned managers like Josh and Sandee to longtime staff members “Right now, I have one of the best groups we’ve ever had,” he says. “Everyone steps up when needed, and the vibe we’ve got going right now is fantastic.”

A Community Staple

Franks Diner has been featured twice on the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives,” solidifying its national reputation. Guy Fieri may not have been around for the most recent filming, but Kevin recalls how fun and professional the crew was: “They worked like a well-oiled machine, and we had a blast with them all day.”

Kevin and Julie’s love for Kenosha shines through in their work, both in the diner and in the community. They serve on various city boards and take pride in giving back. “Kenosha feels like home,” Kevin says. “The community here is something special, and we love being a part of it.”

Looking to the Future

So, what’s next for Franks Diner? Kevin hints at retirement on the horizon, though the couple will continue running the diner for a few more years before passing the torch to the next generation. “Hopefully, they’ll keep the tradition going,” he says.

But until then, you can still count on Franks Diner to dish out its beloved Garbage Plates, delicious French toast, and scratch-made specials in a lively, welcoming atmosphere.
