From Dream to Tradition: Lakeside Oktoberfest Returns to Kenosha

I still remember the first time I met Chuck Nelson, back when Lakeside Oktoberfest was just a dream on paper. I had joined the planning committee for that inaugural festival, and I was immediately drawn to Chuck and his then-partner Greg’s enthusiasm. Their vision wasn’t just about beer—it was about building something for Kenosha that blended community, tradition, and celebration.

Now, only four years later, that dream has become a signature event on the lakefront. Lakeside Oktoberfest has grown into one of Kenosha’s most anticipated fall gatherings, thanks to the dedication of Chuck and the Rustic Road Brewing team.

As the fourth annual Lakeside Oktoberfest approaches—September 25–28, 2025 at Celebration Place—I caught up with Chuck to reflect on the journey and share what festivalgoers can expect this year.

Raising a Stein to Community

Kenosha’s lakefront will soon transform into a hub of Bavarian cheer as Rustic Road Brewing Company hosts its fourth annual Lakeside Oktoberfest. With the scenic backdrop of Lake Michigan, the festival blends traditional German flair with a uniquely Wisconsin touch.

Chuck recalls the humble beginnings: “It actually started because we had a surplus of kegged beer and needed to move it,” he laughs. “The first year was a big lift—we had a full committee of about 15 people, including customers and staff—but it worked. And it’s only grown from there.”

Beer, Brats, and Brat Slingshots

Of course, beer remains the star of the show. Rustic Road will pour their seasonal Oktoberfest Märzen, fan-favorites like Hazelnut Harvest Ale and Tangerine Milkshake IPA, and a rotating lineup of small-batch brews.

But Lakeside Oktoberfest is more than a beer garden. Festivalgoers can test their strength in the traditional Stein Hoisting Contest, cheer on competitors in the Brat Toss, and even try the quirky Brat Slingshot, which literally launches brats across the tent.

New this year: Hold My Beer’s Mobile Axe Throwing Trailer. Families are welcome too, with bounce houses, a family-themed Sunday, and costume contests to keep kids entertained.

Food, Music, and Authentic Vibes

When it comes to food, Rustic Road serves German staples while highlighting local vendors. Longtime favorites like Pico Tacos return, and newcomers like Polish Plate join the mix. “We love highlighting local trucks,” Nelson says.

Music is all about homegrown talent, from seasoned crowd-pleasers to fresh faces like Ivy Ford and One Way Out. Many of the acts started their journey at Rustic Road, creating a uniquely personal vibe for the festival.

Brewing for a Cause

Lakeside Oktoberfest isn’t just about fun—it’s about giving back. Since the beginning, Rustic Road has partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha, raising funds through the playful Brat Trot, a “.1K” run Nelson jokes is “literally 359 feet or so.” Kids’ races have been added in recent years, which he calls a personal highlight.

“We are fiercely pro-community at Rustic Road,” Nelson says. “The Boys & Girls Club fits our mission perfectly.”

From Breakfast to Lederhosen

New this year: an expanded Sunday German-style Breakfast/Brunch, paired with live music and lakefront views. Costumes are encouraged—lederhosen, dirndls, and all. Nelson remembers one favorite: local musician Kai Andersen rocking lederhosen on stage.

A Celebration Rooted in Kenosha

What makes Lakeside Oktoberfest stand out is its mix of authenticity and local pride. “We try to bring the traditional Germanfest vibe, but with a Wisconsin flair,” Nelson explains. “It’s about the people of Kenosha—hospitality, community, and supporting local businesses.”

For me, it’s been amazing to watch the festival grow—from helping shape the early vision to seeing thousands gather on the lakefront each fall. Chuck and his team have created more than a festival—they’ve built a tradition.

This September 24–25, I’ll be right there, stein in hand, celebrating alongside the rest of Kenosha.
