Eyeing the Future: Dr. Graham Keith’s Visionary Care in Downtown Kenosha

Dr. Elias “Graham” Keith is helping Kenoshans look at eye care in a whole new light—literally and figuratively—by focusing on a visionary, personalized approach at Enlightened Eye Care. Sit back and focus as we dive into this exclusive interview—you won’t want to blink!

What inspired you to create Enlightened Eye Care, and how does it stand out from traditional eye care practices?
Dr. Elias “Graham” Keith: I wanted to create a space where patients don’t feel rushed, where their concerns are genuinely heard, and where eye care feels like a conversation, not a chore. Enlightened Eye Care offers a modern, personalized approach to eye care, blending advanced equipment with compassionate care that treats you as a person, not just a set of symptoms. Kenosha has many great eye doctors, but the business model at many clinics prioritizes high volume, often leaving minimal time with the doctor. My practice aims to change that.

Can you walk us through what a typical 45-minute appointment looks like for a patient?
Dr. Elias “Graham” Keith: Once a patient arrives, they’ll find my office upstairs in a somewhat hidden spot—it’s between the Stella and the Post Office, a location many Kenoshans haven’t explored. I personally greet them at the clinic entrance, as I don’t employ a receptionist. Every appointment begins with a sit-down chat about their concerns, directly with me, not a technician. We then move into a comprehensive exam, assessing vision and eye health. I explain every step in age-appropriate terms, ensuring patients leave informed and confident. After discussing treatment options, I handle the checkout process myself, including providing information for self-submitting to insurance and scheduling next year’s exam. Patients can choose to shop for glasses wherever they like, guilt-free—whether that’s Rockit Optical next door, online, or another local optical shop. I even sell contact lenses but gladly support patients who prefer to purchase elsewhere.

Could I see more patients by hiring a staff? Certainly, but that would compromise the level of care I’m after. Think about the last time you had to repeat answers four times at a health clinic—I’m avoiding that experience for my patients.

Why did you choose downtown Kenosha as the location for your practice?
Dr. Elias “Graham” Keith: Downtown Kenosha has a unique charm and sense of history that resonated with me—I come from the same southern Indiana town where the limestone for Simmons Library was quarried 125 years ago. Being neighbors with Rockit Optical felt like a natural pairing. Additionally, with Dr. Grady’s closure of Harborside Eye Care and Dr. Emer relocating, I’m now the only optometrist east of 37th Avenue. It’s rewarding to restore the tradition of eye care in this major area of Kenosha.

What led you to pursue a career in optometry, and how has your journey evolved?
Dr. Elias “Graham” Keith: I’ve always been fascinated by how vision shapes our world. Optometry offers the perfect blend of science, problem-solving, and human connection. After graduating from optometry school, I worked in the Twin Cities, covering eight Walmart Vision Centers. Over the years, I’ve refined my focus on personalized care and continually evolved my skills to meet patients’ unique needs.

How has your background in teaching influenced your approach to patient care and education?
Dr. Elias “Graham” Keith: Teaching gave me a deep appreciation for clear communication. Whether I’m explaining a condition or breaking down test results, every appointment is an opportunity to educate and empower patients. Teaching also taught me patience, which is invaluable when working with both children and adults.

What were some of the most valuable lessons you learned while studying at Indiana University and teaching ophthalmic-related courses?

Dr. Elias “Graham” Keith: Indiana University instilled the importance of precision and lifelong learning. Teaching reinforced that no question is too small and everyone learns at their own pace. These lessons guide my approach daily. Whether a patient wants in-depth explanations or a quick, efficient exam, I respect their needs and adapt accordingly.

You emphasize that vision is our most treasured sense. How do you convey that importance to your patients?
Dr. Elias “Graham” Keith: I educate patients about how their eye health connects to overall well-being. For example, an eye exam can detect diabetes or high blood pressure early. By highlighting these connections and emphasizing preventive care, patients see eye exams as more than routine—they’re essential for their future health.

What are some common misconceptions about eye health, and how do you address them?
Dr. Elias “Graham” Keith: A common misconception is that good vision equals good eye health. Serious conditions like glaucoma or diabetes-related eye damage often have no early symptoms. Routine check-ups are vital. Another misconception is that pregnant women shouldn’t have eye exams, which is false. I once examined a pregnant woman whose eyes revealed signs of blood clots, leading to a cardiologist referral that discovered a hole in her heart. That’s the power of eye care.

How do you ensure patients feel comfortable and informed during visits?
Dr. Elias “Graham” Keith: From the moment they walk in, I ensure patients feel heard. I explain everything in plain terms and encourage questions. They leave knowing their concerns were addressed and their care was personalized. There’s no pressure to purchase products from me—whether they prefer a specific optician or an online retailer, I support their choice.

How do you see Enlightened Eye Care contributing to the Kenosha community?
Dr. Elias “Graham” Keith: I’m committed to providing high-quality care and promoting eye health awareness through local initiatives. By collaborating with organizations like the Boys & Girls Club, Pillar Health, and Kenosha FireFighters C.A.R.E., I’m working to make eye care accessible and build a healthier community.

What’s your vision for Enlightened Eye Care in the next five years?
Dr. Elias “Graham” Keith: My goal is to remain a trusted space for personalized eye care. While I’m not aiming to replace other providers, I want to offer an alternative for those seeking more attentive care. If demand grows, I’d love to expand with a team of like-minded optometrists. I’m also focused on helping patients with chronic headaches and migraines through innovative treatments like Neurolens and Avulux.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
Dr. Elias “Graham” Keith: Seeing the difference I make—whether it’s a child excelling in school after getting their first glasses or a patient finding relief through understanding their condition. These moments drive me every day.

Do you have a memorable patient success story?
Dr. Elias “Graham” Keith: One that stands out is an older man with severe cataracts who struggled to navigate the healthcare system. His vision was so poor he couldn’t see my fingers across the room. I took his car keys, drove him home, and coordinated everything for his cataract surgery. The gratitude he showed reminded me why I chose this field.

What do you love most about owning a business in downtown Kenosha?
Dr. Elias “Graham” Keith: The people. Downtown Kenosha has a tight-knit community, and being part of its revival is incredibly rewarding. Plus, the lake views don’t hurt!

What’s your favorite local spot in downtown Kenosha for coffee or lunch?
Dr. Elias “Graham” Keith: I’ve been a fan of Trolley Dogs for over 20 years. I also loved Harborside Common Grounds and From Scratch’s homemade soups before their moves.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?
Dr. Elias “Graham” Keith: If you’re looking for a fun sport, Kenosha has an incredible pickleball community! I’ve been playing for three years and enjoy it at every level. And if someone wants tuba lessons, I’m happy to chat! You can also find me at the Kenosha Area Chamber of Commerce’s Expo Health & Home Show on Saturday, March 8th & Sunday, March 9th, the event is held at UW-Parkside Petretti Field-house – 900 Wood Road Kenosha.
