For over 35 years Kelly Mackay has been bringing great performers to the Kenosha area, Kelly has an ear for success and his love for the arts and Kenosha shines through in his performance venue The White Lilac. Kelly is an inspiration to never give up on your dreams and The White Lilac continues to grow. We sit down and learn all about Kelly and what The White Lilac brings to downtown Kenosha.

What is The White Lilac?
Kelly: We are a “Micro-Venue” for performing arts.

Can you provide a brief overview of the history of The White Lilac? Where did the idea and concept originate from?
Kelly: I’ve always wanted to provide a space that was all about the artist with a focus on booking
national/international artists.

How did you come up with the name The White Lilac?
Kelly: It started only as a working title because we thought a plant behind the building was a
White Lilac. Turns out the plant was not actually a white lilac, but we thought it was a mysterious enough of a name so we just stuck with it.

Can you describe the ambiance or vibe you’ve cultivated inside The White Lilac?
Kelly: It’s plain but elegant so that the focus is on the performance. A one room building with a stage and fantastic sound quality.

What sets The White Lilac apart from other businesses in downtown Kenosha?
Kelly: It’s the only storefront theater in the area.

What challenges do you encounter in owning a small music venue?
Kelly: The White Lilac is more than just a music venue; we’ve hosted comedy nights, monologue series, variety shows, and we’re expanding to include speakers, poetry readings, films, and more. While incorporating national acts has been somewhat challenging in gaining local support, those from the Kenosha area who attend absolutely love it. It’s also impressive to see how far some guests travel to join us. We regularly welcome visitors from Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, and even had someone fly in from Iowa specifically for one of our shows.

With over 35 years of experience in booking entertainment in Kenosha, what motivates you to keep bring great shows to the Kenosha area?
Kelly: For me, it’s all about the experience. There’s a profound joy in creating events that leave a lasting, positive impact and foster unforgettable memories.

Is it accurate that you booked the Smashing Pumpkins at the Orpheum Theater?
Kelly: Back then, we reached out to Northwestern University’s student radio station, “WNUR,” to assist us in organizing a fundraiser show so we could purchase more paint. Interestingly, The Smashing Pumpkins were one of the opening acts for that event. So, yes, in a way, I did have a part in it.

What draws you to downtown Kenosha?
Kelly: Downtown Kenosha captivates me with its dynamic blend of culture, community, and creativity. The revitalized downtown area, with its unique shops, art galleries, local dining, and nightlife perfectly complements the city’s historical allure. The White Lilac adds to this cultural fabric, offering unique and memorable experiences. This mix of historical charm and modern energy makes downtown Kenosha an appealing destination.

What’s something about Downtown Kenosha that you think new residents should know?
Kelly: New residents should know that Downtown Kenosha is lively and welcoming, with lots of shops, art galleries, and restaurants to explore. It’s right by Lake Michigan, which means beautiful views and waterfront activities are just a stroll away. The area often hosts community events and festivals, making it easy to meet people and feel connected.

What are some activities you enjoy personally in downtown Kenosha?
Kelly: I love attending the events that happen all around the area.

Can you name some of the acts that have already performed at The White Lilac?
Nellie McKay, Steve Forbert, Paul Cebar, Ike Reilly, John Sieger, Paul Cebar, Joshua Davis, Brent Mitchell to name a few.

Could you share any memorable experiences as a downtown Kenosha business owner?
Kelly: As far as The White Lilac goes, I really thought it was cool to have the songwriters workshop for the Harborside Academy students. It was fun to watch them learn from songwriting experts like John Sieger, Ike Reilly and Paul Cebar.

What is your vision for the future of The White Lilac?
Kelly: The White Lilac envisions becoming a premier destination for national acts, positioning itself as a key venue in the regional cultural scene and drawing audiences from across the nation while boosting local tourism and economy. The White Lilac plans to leverage its reputation to attract a diverse lineup of celebrated artists and performers, enhancing Kenosha’s appeal as a vibrant cultural hub. This strategy will not only elevate the venue’s profile but also enrich the cultural fabric of the community.

How do you manage your time balancing responsibilities as an alderperson, realtor, and small business owner?
Kelly: I’m quite A.D.D. so it’s a good thing that I get to keep myself so busy doing things that I enjoy!

How can people find out more about upcoming shows at The White Lilac?
Kelly: whitelilackenosha.com

What’s next for you and The White Lilac?
Kelly: I’d like The White Lilac to partner with local producers, put heads together and come up with some cool things for our community to enjoy.

What is something people might not know that you offer at The White Lilac?
Kelly: We also offer the space for rental. We have tables, chairs, top of the line PA system, high end projection and a screen.

Editors note: I have personal know Kelly MacKay for half of my life, and I am so happy that he has finally reached his goal of having his very own venue. This man truly never gave up! Thank you for all the great performances you have already brought to Kenosha and cheers to all the upcoming acts you will be showcasing. Go Kelly go! xoxo
