The team at the Beach House also programs a TON of events throughout the summer. The beach is also wheelchair accessible, with mobility mats placed on the sand during the summer months.

2. 🏛️ Explore Historic Lighthouses

Simmons Island is home to two historic lighthouses: the Kenosha Light Station and the North Pier Lighthouse. The Southport Light Station, which is part of the Kenosha History Center, was built in 1866 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  It offers a glimpse into the region’s maritime history at the adjacent light keepers cottage museum. Visitors can explore the lighthouse, climbing the 72 steps to the top of the tower for breathtaking views of Lake Michigan, the downtown area, and on a clear day the Chicago skyline! The keeper’s house is a gem with a variety of local history, as well as shipping, manufacturing, and maritime history for the area. The North Pier Lighthouse, with its iconic red structure, is a favorite among photographers and visitors seeking picturesque views of Lake Michigan. It’s privately owned despite being the functioning light for our harbor – and it actually houses an artist studio!

3. 🍽️ Grab a TWISTED bite at the Kenosha Yacht Club

This summer, Twisted Cuisine Catering is hosting a pop-up at the Kenosha Yacht Club. Twisted was a favorite dining venue in Kenosha for more than 15 years. The company continues to offer catering and is now running food service on the island through Labor Day. Enjoy great views of the Kenosha Harbor, live music, drinks, and tasty food. The menu is simple featuring salads, flatbreads, sandwiches, and appetizers. Popular items from the original restaurant like the Twisted Chicken Salad (It’s purple!), Saganaki, and Brussels Sprout Pizza are on the pop-up menu. There are many new additions, too.  With food, entertainment, and great location, it is a perfect summer destination to meet up with friends and family. Watch for the weekly specials that include things like meatloaf, shrimp dinners, and more!

Simmons Island offers some of the best sunrise views over Lake Michigan. Early risers can enjoy the tranquil beauty of the lake as the sun rises over the horizon. The island is also a haven for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts, with numerous species of birds and other wildlife inhabiting the area. Whether you’re an avid photographer or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Simmons Island provides a serene natural setting.
