SUMMARY:Theodore Roosevelt and the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 14 | 12:00pm – 1:00pm | Speaker: Calvin Watts\, Academic Advisor\, UW-Parkside \nOnly two years old when Fort Sumter was fired upon\, Theodore Roosevelt would spend the rest of his life reckoning with\, and trying to live up to\, the legacy of the Civil War generation. Acutely aware of the sacrifices made by those who had served their country\, and his father’s choice to not take up arms\, TR would engage with personalities who had served on both sides all his life\, and was always measuring himself against these individuals. When a global crisis on par with the Civil War finally came in 1914\, he would send his sons to France to play the part he had always dreamed of. After years of expounding the glories of war\, he would pay the ultimate price as a father\, forever shattering his long-held notions of duty and honor.

SUMMARY:The Shuttlesworth Project: A Fire You Can’t Put Out
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Cassandra Griffen\, Photojournalist \nCassandra Griffen’s program will showcase her images of the foot soldiers of the Civil Rights Movement who\, though largely unknown to the nation\, served as integral parts of Reverend Fred Lee Shuttlesworth’s determination to undo Jim Crow laws in the South. These images will show the impact that Rev. Shuttlesworth had on other Civil Rights leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King. \n“The Shuttlesworth Project: A Fire You Can’t Put Out\,” is archived in the Library of Congress and was a major exhibit at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute in 2012. This project was intensely curated with interviews with the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement involved from the 1950s to present. \nCassandra writes about the project: “Both my family and Reverend Shuttlesworth’s lived in Mt. Meigs\, Alabama\, which spearheaded my interest and responsibility to do my part in eliminating segregation and racism in our nation through documenting protests\, strikes\, police brutality\, Bloody Sunday memorials in Selma and more. The program will include images of the significant civil rights participants streamed during my presentation and paused if clarification or additional info is needed by the audience.”
