SUMMARY:BHB at the Spooky Market!
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Port of Film Fear Festival for their annual Spooky Market on Saturday\, September 14th between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.! We will be selling our favorite horror novels\, as well as other creepy goods and gifts. Christina Henry\, author of “Horseman” and “The House that Horror Built” will be joining us from 1 to 4 p.m. for a meet and greet with readers! \nABOUT CHRISTINA HENRY \nChristina Henry is a horror and dark fantasy author whose works include “Near the Bone”\, “The Ghost Tree”\, “Looking Glass”\, “The Girl in Red”\, “The Mermaid”\, “Lost Boy”\, “Alice”\, “Red Queen” and the seven-book urban fantasy Black Wings series. \nShe enjoys running long distances\, reading anything she can get her hands on and watching movies with samurai\, zombies and/or subtitles in her spare time. She lives in Chicago with her husband and son. \nABOUT THE HORSEMAN \nIn this atmospheric\, terrifying novel that draws strongly from “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow\,” the author of “Alice” and “The Girl in Red” works her trademark magic\, spinning an engaging and frightening new story from a classic tale. \nEveryone in Sleepy Hollow knows about the Horseman\, but no one really believes in him. Not even Ben Van Brunt’s grandfather\, Brom Bones\, who was there when it was said the Horseman chased the upstart Crane out of town. Brom says that’s just legend\, the village gossips talking. \nMore than thirty years after those storied events\, the village is a quiet place. Fourteen-year-old Ben loves to play “Sleepy Hollow boys\,” reenacting the events Brom once lived through. But then Ben and a friend stumble across the headless body of a child in the woods near the village\, and the discovery makes Ben question everything the adults in Sleepy Hollow have ever said. Could the Horseman be real after all? Or does something even more sinister stalk the woods? \nABOUT THE HOUSE THAT BUILT HORROR \nA single mother working in the gothic mansion of a reclusive horror director stumbles upon terrifying secrets in the captivating new novel from the national bestselling author of “Good Girls Don’t Die” and “Horseman”. \nHarry Adams has always loved horror movies\, so it’s not a total coincidence that she took the job cleaning house for movie director Javier Castillo. His forbidding graystone Chicago mansion\, Bright Horses\, is filled from top to bottom with terrifying props and costumes\, as well as glittering awards from his career making films that thrilled audiences—until family tragedy and scandal forced him to vanish from the industry. \nJavier values discretion\, and Harry has always tried to clean the house immaculately\, keep her head down\, and keep her job safe—she needs the money to support her son. But then she starts hearing noises from behind a locked door. Noises that sound remarkably like a human voice calling for help\, even though Javier lives alone and never has visitors. Harry knows that not asking questions is a vital part of working for Javier\, but she soon finds that the sinister house may be home to secrets she can’t ignore.

SUMMARY:Margaret Peterson Haddix in Kenosha!
DESCRIPTION:Margaret Peterson Haddix is coming to Kenosha! \nJoin us on September 11th at Southwest Library\, 7979 38th Ave\, for a conversation with Margaret Peterson Haddix and Lorelei Savaryn to celebrate the release of Book 3 in the Trash & Treasure series\, “The Stolen Key”! As a kid\, she knew two girls who had the exact same first\, middle\, and last names and shared the same birthday—only one year apart—and she always thought that was bizarre. \nAs an adult\, Haddix worked as a newspaper reporter and copy editor in Indiana before her first book\, “Running Out of Time”\, was published. She has since written more than forty books for kids and teens\, including the Greystone Secrets series\, the Shadow Children series\, the Missing series\, the Children of Exile series\, and lots of stand-alones. Haddix and her husband\, Doug\, now live in Columbus\, Ohio\, where they raised their two kids. You can learn more about her at haddixbooks.com. \nABOUT MYSTERIES OF TRASH AND TREASURE: “THE STOLEN KEY” \nNew York Times bestselling author Margaret Peterson Haddix delivers the thrilling conclusion to her middle grade Mysteries of Trash and Treasure series as Colin and Nevaeh unravel their most personal mystery yet. \nColin has spent all summer solving mysteries with his friend Nevaeh. But they’ve only ever dealt with other people’s mysteries—ones that are safe for Colin to think about. He’s still stuck on the mystery surrounding his own father\, who his mother refuses to talk about and he can’t remember meeting. \nThen one morning Colin finds a shoebox on his porch with a note on top: “Your father wanted you to have this.” Inside the box is a key. This new clue makes Colin even more determined to find out the truth about his dad and why his parents split up when he was a baby. Colin and Nevaeh begin investigating Colin’s father in a quest that takes them from eerie storage units to lock-lined bridges to\, strangely\, secrets in Nevaeh’s family. \nBut the closer they get to connecting the clues\, the more trouble awaits them. A serious accident leaves Nevaeh’s family reeling—and Nevaeh racked with guilt. And digging into Colin’s father’s past may lead Colin and his mom into even more danger. Can Colin and Nevaeh solve the mystery before it’s too late? \nABOUT LORELEI SAVARYN \nLorelei Savaryn is an author of magical stories for children\, including “The Night Train” releasing August 20th\, 2024. She holds a BA in creative writing and works in schools as an instructional coach. When she isn’t writing\, she spends her time amid the beautiful chaos of life with her husband and four children outside of Chicago. She is also the author of “The Edge of In Between” and “The Circus of Stolen Dreams”. You can find her online at LoreleiSavaryn.com and on Instagram @LoreleiSavaryn. \nABOUT THE NIGHT TRAIN \nMaddie Maverick likes to win. Whether it’s track team races or one-liners she delivers on her parents’ home renovation show\, Maddie knows that if she puts in the work\, she’ll always come out on top. But things take a turn when her ghost-hunting nana passes away\, and Maddie and her twin sister\, Nat\, discover that Nana left them an unexpected inheritance: They can now see ghosts just like she did. \nWhile Nat is totally on board to try to help some spirits find peace\, a ghostly calling is just not Maddie’s speed. So when history comes back to haunt their town\, and the story of a decades-old train crash rears its ugly head\, Maddie wants nothing to do with the ghosts of days long gone. But one ghost in particular won’t go away\, and Maddie might just be the only one with the power to help her—that is\, if she can survive the Night Train herself. \nIn this eerie tale by beloved author Lorelei Savaryn\, one girl’s determination to bring long-hidden secrets to light might just change her town—and herself—forever.

SUMMARY:Meet & Greet with Markelle Grabo
DESCRIPTION:A faerie curse. A magical wood. A bear that has turned into a boy. And a young girl that must use memories from her childhood in order to save them all. \nIn “Call Forth a Fox”\, debut author Markelle Garbo spins the classic “Snow White and Rose Red” fairytale into a new magical story\, perfect for fans of Holly Black. Markelle will be at Blue House Books on August 17th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a meet and greet event to chat with readers and sign copies of “Call Forth a Fox”! \nABOUT THE BOOK \nThe western wood is where Ro’s father built their garden\, taught her to forage\, and told her tales of the faeries who live there—how to summon them\, how to protect herself\, and warnings of what they are capable of. Now\, her father is gone\, the garden has withered\, and their family is struggling. Her mother and sister want to move into town\, but Ro doesn’t want to give up the memories of her father and his stories—or the charming village girl who shares Ro’s love of the trees. The forest isn’t ready to let Ro go either. \nOne winter night\, on her way home from foraging\, Ro encounters a bear attacking a fox. She fights the bear to save the fox’s life\, only to see the bear turn into a boy after her sister shoots him with an arrow. When the boy wakes\, he has no memory of who he is—all he knows is Ro’s name and that he has to kill the fox. \nRo never believed in the faeries from her father’s stories\, but she can’t deny the magic surrounding her and that both the boy and the fox are victims of a faerie curse. She’ll have to remember everything her father taught her in order to extract herself from this deadly game and keep her precious fox out of harm’s way. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nMarkelle Grabo retells the fairy tales that frustrate her\, which\, based on that guideline\, could include nearly all of them. SUMMARY:Meet & Greet with Rebecca Roque
DESCRIPTION:“Black Mirror” meets “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” when a teenage girl’s relentless investigation into her best friend’s death plunges her deep into a dangerous underground society where every secret has a price. \nRebecca Roque\, author of “Till Human Voices Wake Us” will be at Blue House Books on Saturday\, July 27th! Stop by Blue House Books between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to chat with Rebecca about her debut novel and grab a signed copy! This is the perfect crossover fiction if you love murder mysteries with a slight twist on reality. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nWinner of the 2024 National Indie Excellence Award in Teen Fiction! \nSeventeen-year-old Cia lived in a house of secrets until she was five\, when her father literally burned it all down. The price of his clandestine operation? Cia’s entire family\, and her leg. So\, when her best friend Alice says she has a secret too\, Cia wants nothing to do with it—even if it could shed light on her family’s dark past. But Alice doesn’t let go so easily\, especially when her search for answers might help find Noah\, the boy who broke her heart before going missing two months ago. \nBut then the police find Alice’s body floating in the quarry. \nNow Cia would give anything to know Alice’s secrets. Because Alice would never have jumped\, no matter what the cops think. Desperate to figure out what happened to her friend\, Cia picks up the threads of Alice’s investigation\, plunging deep into a shadow world of augmented reality. As she untangles one web of lies after another\, Cia finds herself pursued by an enemy that will pay any price to keep their secrets buried. But the girl who already lost everything isn’t about to back down now. Her only chance to avenge Alice lies in exposing an underground society preying on those they think no one will miss—but danger lies closer to home than she imagined. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nRebecca Roque comes from a long line of proudly ungovernable women. After graduating from Rush University\, she hit the ground running as a critical care nurse\, often finding herself at the crossroads of the most fascinating human stories. When she isn’t annoying her neighbors by luring everything feathered\, furred\, and feral to her backyard\, Rebecca enjoys true crime podcasts and hiking in places true crime podcasters would probably advise against. “Till Human Voices Wake Us” is her debut novel.

DESCRIPTION:Maybe some stories aren’t meant to be told…\nIn “Mr. Wilson’s Wives\,” an author secludes herself in Northern Wisconsin after upsetting her loved ones with her tell-all memoir\, soon finds inspiration in the scandalous story of a local many and his dozens of ex-wives. As she digs into the past and gathers material for a new book\, she soon learns that some secrets should stay buried.\nKaitlyn Bolyard\, author of “Mr. Wilson’s Wives” and several other works will be at Blue House Books for a meet and greet event on July 13th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.! When her younger brother unexpectedly appears at her doorstep\, she puts him to work helping her research and gather information. But with each mystery Elizabeth uncovers\, she comes closer to the truth: maybe some stories aren’t meant to be told\, and maybe building family trust is more important. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nKaitlyn Bolyard teaches writing and literature at DePaul University and Carthage College. SUMMARY:Rebecca Makkai in Conversation with Amy Pease
DESCRIPTION:A decades-old tragedy\, a suspect convicted\, and a woman who is unsure the case was ever really solved. Rebecca Makkai’s “I Have Some Questions for You” has been a consistent bestseller at Blue House Books\, and we are so excited to welcome Rebecca to Kenosha to help celebrate the paperback release of this haunting mystery novel!\nRebecca will be at Blue House Books from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday\, March 19th to chat with readers and sign books! Joining Rebecca is Wisconsin author Amy Pease\, whose debut novel “Northwoods” about a murder an a seemingly idyllic town in the north of Wisconsin\, has been a huge hit with our readers! These two Midwestern authors will be chatting about their books and what drives them to write such page-turning thrillers!\nThis event is FREE but registration is required! Register here: https://blue-house-books.com/events/34218\n\nABOUT “I HAVE SOME QUESTIONS FOR YOU”\nThe riveting new novel — “part true-crime page-turner\, part campus coming-of-age” (San Francisco Chronicle) — from the author of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist “The Great Believers.”\nA successful film professor and podcaster\, Bodie Kane is content to forget her past—the family tragedy that marred her adolescence\, her four largely miserable years at a New Hampshire boarding school\, and the murder of her former roommate\, Thalia Keith\, in the spring of their senior year. Though the circumstances surrounding Thalia’s death and the conviction of the school’s athletic trainer\, Omar Evans\, are hotly debated online\, Bodie prefers—needs—to let sleeping dogs lie.\nBut when the Granby School invites her back to teach a course\, Bodie is inexorably drawn to the case and its increasingly apparent flaws. In their rush to convict Omar\, did the school and the police overlook other suspects? Is the real killer still out there? As she falls down the very rabbit hole she was so determined to avoid\, Bodie begins to wonder if she wasn’t as much of an outsider at Granby as she’d thought—if\, perhaps\, back in 1995\, she knew something that might have held the key to solving the case.\nIn “I Have Some Questions for You\,” award-winning author Rebecca Makkai has crafted her most irresistible novel yet: a stirring investigation into collective memory and a deeply felt examination of one woman’s reckoning with her past\, with a transfixing mystery at its heart. Timely\, hypnotic\, and populated with a cast of unforgettable characters\, “I Have Some Questions for You” is at once a compulsive page-turner and a literary triumph.\nAbout Rebecca Makkai\nRebecca Makkai’s last novel\, “The Great Believers\,” was a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award; it was the winner of the ALA Carnegie Medal\, the Stonewall Book Award\, the Clark Prize\, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize; and it was chosen as one of the Ten Best Books of 2018 by The New York Times. Her other books are the novels “The Borrower” and “The Hundred-Year House\,” and the collection Music for Wartime—four stories from which appeared in The Best American Short Stories. A 2022 Guggenheim Fellow\, Rebecca is on the MFA faculties of the University of Nevada\, Reno at Lake Tahoe and Northwestern University\, and is Artistic Director of StoryStudio Chicago.\nAbout Amy Pease\nAmy Pease is an alumnus of the University of Wisconsin and the Madison Writer’s Studio\, and works as a nurse practitioner\, where she is a nationally recognized HIV specialist. She lives in Wisconsin with her husband and two children. “Northwoods” is her first novel.

SUMMARY:Bonnie Jo Campbell at Blue House Books

With a “ruthless and precise eye for the details of the physical world” (Jane Smiley\, New York Times Book Review)\, Bonnie Jo Campbell presents an elegant antidote to the dark side of masculinity\, celebrating the resilience of nature and the brutality and sweetness of rural life.\nBonnie Jo will be in conversation with another midwestern author (TBA)\, and will be available to chat with readers and sign books! Register here: https://blue-house-books.com/events/32723\nABOUT THE BOOK\nOn an island in the Great Massasauga Swamp–an area known as “The Waters” to the residents of nearby Whiteheart\, Michigan–herbalist and eccentric Hermine “Herself” Zook has healed the local women of their ailments for generations. As stubborn as her tonics are powerful\, Herself inspires reverence and fear in the people of Whiteheart\, and even in her own three estranged daughters. The youngest–the beautiful\, inscrutable\, and lazy Rose Thorn–has left her own daughter\, eleven-year-old Dorothy “Donkey” Zook\, to grow up wild.\nDonkey spends her days searching for truths in the lush landscape and in her math books\, waiting for her wayward mother and longing for a father\, unaware that family secrets\, passionate love\, and violent men will flood through the swamp and upend her idyllic childhood. Rage simmers below the surface of this divided community\, and those on both sides of the divide have closed their doors against the enemy. The only bridge across the waters is Rose Thorn.\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nBonnie Jo Campbell is the author of the novels “Once Upon a River\,” a National Bestseller which was adapted into a full-length feature film released to international acclaim in 2020\, and Q Road. Her critically-acclaimed short fiction collections include American Salvage\, which was a finalist for both the National Book Award and the National Book Critic’s Circle Award; Women and Other Animals\, which won the AWP Grace Paley Prize for Short Fiction; and Mothers\, Tell Your Daughters. SUMMARY:HOLY AMERICAN BURNOUT: Reading & Book Signing with Sean Enfield
DESCRIPTION:Let’s talk about the great American condition: burnout. \nLocal author Sean Enfield will be at Kenosha Creative Space on Wednesday\, December 13th from 7 to 9 p.m. to talk about his newly-published collection of essays “Holy American Burnout!\,” which weaves personal essay and cultural critique into the historical fabric of Black and bi-racial identity. \nJoining Sean are three other writers who will be sharing their own personal and cultural commentary through poetry\, essays\, and narrative stories. This event will be particularly relevant to teachers and students\, as Sean analyzes this growing trend of working to burnout through classroom narratives and his experiences as a teacher. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nSean Enfield delves into the great American condition: burnout. \nThreading his experiences both as a Texan student and later as a first-year teacher of predominately Muslim students at a Texas middle school\, Holy American Burnout! weaves personal essay and cultural critique into the historical fabric of Black and bi-racial identity. \nEnfield intersects examinations of which voices are granted legitimacy by virtue of school curriculum\, the complex relationship between basketball and education for Black and brown students\, his students’ burgeoning political consciousness during the 2016 presidential campaign\, and cultural figures ranging from Kendrick Lamar to Hamlet. \nThese classroom narratives weave around Enfield’s own formative experiences contending with a conflicted bi-racial family lineage\, reenacting the Middle Passage as the only Black student in his 7th grade history class\, and moshing in both Christian and secular hardcore pits. \nAs Enfield wrestles with the physical\, mental\, and emotional burdens that American society places on educators\, students\, and all relatively conscious minorities in this country\, he reaches for an education that better navigates our burnt-out empire. \nABOUT THE AUTHORS \nSean Enfield is an essayist\, poet\, gardener\, bassist\, and educator from Dallas\, TX. His writing attempts to find connection through music and words as reclamation of labor as community care and as resistance to the many forces of white supremacy working against marginalized bodies. You can find his work at seanenfield.com. \nLorna Pecard is a neurodivergent poet and essayist from Milwaukee. She received her MFA from Minnesota State University\, Mankato. You can find her reading in the sunroom or curled up somewhere. \nAngela Voras-Hills’s first collection of poems\, Louder Birds (Pleiades 2020)\, was awarded the Lena-Miles Wever Todd Poetry Prize. Her poetry and prose have appeared in Kenyon Review\, American Poetry Review\, Prairie Schooner\, Best New Poets\, and New Ohio Review\, among other journals and anthologies. She has received support from The Sustainable Arts Foundation\, Key West Literary Seminar\, and Writers’ Room of Boston. She lives with her family in Milwaukee\, WI\, where she is a PhD Student at UW-Milwaukee. \nAntonio Vargas-Nieto is a Mexican born writer\, teaching artist\, and emulsion enthusiast. He is a 2022-2023 Poetry Coalition Fellow and has been featured in Spectra\, Moody\, and Silver Operation. Antonio is based in Milwaukee\, WI.

SUMMARY:Annelise Ryan in Kenosha for the release of DEATH IN THE DARK WOODS
DESCRIPTION:Cryptozoologist Morgan Carter and her dog Newt are back for another adventure in the newest instalment of the Monster Hunter Mystery Series\, and author Annelise Ryan is celebrating with us in Kenosha! Join us on Tuesday\, December 12th as we help launch “Death in the Dark Woods” with the author herself and fellow cozy mystery author Erica Ruth Neubauer at 7 p.m. at Blue House Books in Downtown Kenosha. \nWe’re excited for what is sure to be a wildly entertaining discussion about murder and mythical creatures. Both authors will be available for questions from the audience and for book signings and photos! \nABOUT THE BOOK \nA potential Bigfoot sighting is linked to a vicious murder\, but skeptical cryptozoologist Morgan Carter is on the case in this new Monster Hunter Mystery by USA Today bestselling author Annelise Ryan. \nBusiness has been booming since Morgan Carter solved the case of the monster living in Lake Michigan. The Odds and Ends bookstore is thriving\, of course\, but Morgan is most excited by the doors that were opened for her as a cryptid hunter. Recently\, there have been numerous sightings of a Bigfoot-type creature in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest area of Bayfield County\, Wisconsin. After a man is found dead from a vicious throat injury in the forest\, the conservation warden asks Morgan to investigate. \nWhen Morgan and her dog\, Newt\, go there to investigate\, they uncover a trail of lies\, deception\, and murder. It seems a mysterious creature is indeed living in the forest\, and Morgan might be its next target. \nABOUT ANNELISE RYAN \nAnnelise Ryan is a pseudonym for the author of the new Monster Hunter Mystery series\, the first of which\, A DEATH IN DOOR COUNTY\, was released in September 2022. The second book in the series\, DEATH IN THE DARK WOODS\, is scheduled for release in December of 2023. \nAnnelise also penned the rib-tickling12- book Mattie Winston Mystery series featuring the adventures of a wryly cynical nurse-turned-coroner in a small Wisconsin town and the spin-off Helping Hands Mysteries. \nAs Allyson K. Abbott\, she authored a 6-book series known as the Mack’s Bar Mysteries (a bit of cheeky fun there with the initials on that nom de plume!) \nAnd as Beth Amos\, she has written more than 200 published articles\, worked as a book reviewer for Barnes & Noble\, and written five thrillers\, three of which were published by HarperCollins in the late ’90s. She is an active member of Mystery Writers of America\, Sisters in Crime\, and International Thriller Writers. She is a registered nurse whose past work experience has included everything from birth (obstetrics) to death (hospice). She recently retired after spending her last 20 years working in the ER and she is now enjoying several side hobbies\, including competitive Scrabble\, working with stained glass\, and gardening. \nABOUT ERICA RUTH NEUBAUER \nErica Ruth Neubauer spent eleven years in the military\, two years as a cop and one year as a high school English teacher before finding her way as a writer. She has reviewed mysteries and crime fiction for several years at publications such as Publishers Weekly\, the Los Angeles Review of Books and Mystery Scene Magazine and is a member of both Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime. When she’s not writing her next novel or curled up with a book\, she enjoys traveling\, yoga and craft beer. She lives in Milwaukee\, WI with her husband.
