SUMMARY:BEAST OF THE NORTH WOODS: Annelise Ryan in Kenosha
DESCRIPTION:Morgan Carter is back in the latest Monster Hunter Mystery series\, “Beast of the North Woods”! When a local fisherman is mauled to death\, it seems like the only possible cause is a mythical creature in the latest puzzling entry in this USA Today bestselling series. \nJoin Annelise Ryan at Blue House Books on Thursday\, January 30th at 7 p.m. as part of her book tour for “Beast of the North Woods”! Annelise will be discussing her latest book with fellow Wisconsin author Amy Pease (“Northwoods”)\, answering questions from the audience\, and signing books! \nThis is a ticketed event\, so make sure to grab your ticket before they run out! \nABOUT ANNELISE RYAN: \nAnnelise Ryan is a pseudonym for the Wisconsin-based author of the Monster Hunter Mystery series\, the first of which\, “A Death in Door County”\, was released in September 2022. The second book in the series\, “Death in the Dark Woods”\, came out in December of 2023 and book #3\, “Beast of the North Woods” is set for release on January 28\, 2025. \nAnnelise also penned the rib-tickling 12- book Mattie Winston Mystery series featuring the adventures of a wryly cynical nurse-turned-coroner in a small Wisconsin town and the spin-off Helping Hands Mysteries. \nAs Allyson K. Abbott\, she authored a 6-book series known as the Mack’s Bar Mysteries (a bit of cheeky fun there with the initials on that nom de plume!) \nAnd as Beth Amos\, she has written more than 200 published articles\, worked as a book reviewer for Barnes & Noble\, and written five thrillers\, three of which were published by HarperCollins in the late ’90s. She is an active member of Mystery Writers of America\, Sisters in Crime\, and International Thriller Writers. \nShe is a registered nurse whose past work experience has included everything from birth (obstetrics) to death (hospice). She recently retired after spending her last 20 years working in the ER. \nABOUT BEAST OF THE NORTH WOODS: \nAn ice fisherman is savagely mauled to death in Rhinelander\, Wisconsin\, and an eyewitness claims the man was attacked by a hodag. There’s just one problem with that: it’s well known that the creature is not real and was created by a local hoaxer. So how could an imaginary creature be chomping on local sportsmen? \nThe suggestion that a hodag killed someone isn’t well received by the townsfolk because of its beloved ties to the town and the money it generates from tourist dollars. Due to this\, people begin to suspect the witness is the real killer\, especially when it’s discovered he has a tangled past with the victim. \nThe witness to the attack happens to be the nephew of Morgan Carter’s bookstore employee\, Rita Bosworth\, who convinces the professional cryptozoologist to travel to Wisconsin to prove that a hodag not only exists but killed the victim. \nClues may be hard to come by\, but one thing’s for sure: something killed that man\, and that something now has its eyes focused on Morgan. \nABOUT AMY PEASE: \nAmy Pease is an alumnus of the University of Wisconsin and the Madison Writer’s Studio\, and works as a nurse practitioner\, where she is a nationally recognized HIV specialist. She lives in Wisconsin with her husband and two children. “Northwoods” is her first novel. \n“Northwoods” is a tale of the dark underbelly of an idyllic Midwestern resort town is revealed in the aftermath of a murder with ties to America’s opioid epidemic in this unputdownable and thrilling debut that is perfect for fans of James Lee Burke\, William Kent Krueger\, and Mindy Mejia.

SUMMARY:Meet & Greet with Carla Luna
DESCRIPTION:If your secret vice is to watch those Hallmark holiday romance movies this time of year\, you cannot miss the newest book from local romance author Carla Luna! \nIn the first of the Dutchess Hotel Series\, it has fake-dating\, holiday romance\, friends-to-lovers\, a pinch of spice\, and a swoon-worthy Santa. \nCarla Luna will be at Blue House Books on Sunday\, December 1st\, from noon to 3 p.m. to chat with readers and sign books. Whether you are buying this book for yourself or a loved one\, it is the perfect book to commence the Holiday season. We hope to see you there! \nABOUT THE BOOK \nHave yourself a merry little fauxmance—with a dashing Santa who just might make it real. \nRosie Gonzalez isn’t having a wonderful Christmas time. Not when she’s at risk of losing her job as assistant manager of the Duchess—Victoria’s oldest boutique hotel. If she and her team can’t bring in more guests by the end of December\, she’ll be let go. Adding to her stress is a calendar filled with family gatherings where her mom will inevitably nag her for still being single.\nDrew Richardson isn’t faring much better. As if working alongside his ex at Northlife Fitness wasn’t bad enough\, now she’s invited him to her December wedding. And since all his coworkers will be there\, bailing isn’t an option. To get through it\, he’ll need a plus-one for moral support. \nSo\, when Rosie recruits him to play Santa for her hotel’s activities\, he also proposes a fake-dating scheme to benefit them both. Just for the holidays—nothing more. But as things between them turn from nice to naughty\, they’ll have to decide whether a real relationship could be the best Christmas gift of all. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nCarla Luna writes contemporary romance with a dollop of humor and a pinch of spice. A former archaeologist\, she still dreams of traveling to far-off places and channels that wanderlust into the settings of her stories. Her books have been called “escape reads\,” ideal for perusing during a beachside vacation\, a long flight\, or a relaxing weekend at the lake. \nWhen she’s not writing\, she spends her time reading\, baking\, and taking long walks while listening to pop culture podcasts. Carla is of Mexican-American descent\, with roots in Los Angeles and Vancouver Island\, but she currently resides in Cedarburg\, Wisconsin with her family and her feisty Siberian cat.

SUMMARY:Reading & Book Signing with William C. Moyers
DESCRIPTION:William Cope Moyers was a model of sober success. As his inspiring story of overcoming addiction was on its way to becoming a New York Times bestseller\, everyone thought he had finally achieved the redemption promised by recovery—including him. But the perfect story that helped Moyers become a famous face of the recovery movement was already unraveling\, revealing a yet-to-be healed chasm between his public persona and conflicted inner life. \nWilliam will be at Blue House Books on Thursday\, October 31st to talk about his new book\, “Broken Open: What Painkillers Taught Me About Life and Recovery”. A follow-up to his 2006 memoir “Broken My Story of Addiction and Redemption”\, this new book is Moyers’s story of the ups and downs of life beyond the bright moments of early sobriety and what happened when a new crisis invaded what once seemed like a steady and secure recovery. \nWilliam will share a few highlights of his book and talk to the audience about his journey. There will also be time for a Q&A with the audience and book signing. This event is free\, but registration is required: https://www.blue-house-books.com/events/1231220241031. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nWilliam didn’t know something was missing until it happened. He’d been in recovery for alcohol and drugs for years. He was a recovery activist and a spokesperson for the gold standard of treatment and recovery organizations. He was a model leader and follower of Twelve Step programs. But\, still\, he slipped. And his slip lasted a few years. Privately\, he was addicted to painkillers while publicly saying he was in recovery from alcohol and drug use. So\, was he still in recovery? How could this happen to someone who did everything “right”? How did it go so wrong? \nWith brutal honesty and introspection\, William shares what happened after sobriety—after he’d published his candid and shocking memoir\, Broken\, in 2006. While he no longer frequented or passed out on the floor of crack houses\, his life of sobriety wasn’t perfect. But his recovery was strong\, or so he thought. Unfortunately\, the opioid epidemic was stronger. It broke him. \nBroken Open could be one long story of self-justification. Instead\, William takes a courageous look at the years he struggled and suffered to reclaim his recovery. He concludes by sharing the new perspectives these experiences provided. Recovery isn’t black and white. Our recovery stories aren’t things we have to live up to; they’re journeys we get to live into. All-or-nothing approaches don’t address the complications that make us human. As we continue our life journeys we learn and change and grow—and the things and people that help us sometimes change too. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nWilliam C. Moyers is the vice president of public affairs and community relations for Hazelden Betty Ford\, based in Minnesota. \nSince 1996\, as the organization’s public advocate\, Moyers carries the messages about addiction\, treatment and recovery to audiences everywhere. \nHe has appeared on Larry King Live\, the Oprah Winfrey show\, Good Morning America and National Public Radio. William has written four brooks\, including Broken: “My Story of Addiction and Redemption”\, a New York Times bestseller that remains in print. His latest book\, “Broken Open: What Painkillers Taught Me About Life and Recovery”\, is available now. Moyers and his wife\, Nell Hurley\, live in St. Paul\, Minnesota. Between them they share four adult children.

SUMMARY:Geo Rutherford in Kenosha!
DESCRIPTION:TikTok and Instagram sensation Geo Rutherford is coming to Kenosha for the launch of Spooky Lakes\, her debut middle grade book about the odd\, bizarre\, and downright creepy features of lakes throughout the world. Join Geo Rutherford at the Southwest Library (7979 38th Ave) on September 23rd to help us celebrate the release! Geo will be doing a presentation about several of the spooky lakes featured in her book\, she will take questions from the audience\, and sign books! \nThis event is FREE but registration is required. Please RSVP below for everyone in your party attending. \nABOUT SPOOKY LAKES \nFrom Geo Rutherford—the creator of the hit series Spooky Lake Month (over 65 million likes!)—comes this thrilling nonfiction book that plumbs the depths of 25 unusual lakes around the world. \nBacked by extensive research and packed with all-new content—including eerie and eye-popping watercolor illustrations in full color—Spooky Lakes takes readers on an adventure through weird and wild waters. \nSome of Earth’s strangest—and creepiest—wonders lie deep below the surface… \nThere’s Lake Natron\, a Tanzanian lake so briny that its waters can mummify any creature that touches its surface; Lake Maracaibo\, a Venezuelan tidal bay where a constantly brewing storm sends an average of 28 lightning bolts per second into the water; and at the bottom of Lake Superior\, the crew of the USS Kamloops—which mysteriously disappeared in 1921—remains somehow almost perfectly preserved to this day. \nReaders will learn not only about the science of hydrology\, but why understanding the natural world is crucial to protecting it from pollution and climate change. \nABOUT GEO RUTHERFORD \nGeo Rutherford is an artist and teacher who has spent her entire professional career working in art education. She is an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin\, Milwaukee and the visual arts director at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. While Geo’s interest in lakes began as a part of her artistic practice\, she soon found a captive audience after sharing the information she was learning on TikTok. Her videos explaining the science behind strange ice formations or drifting islands piqued the interest of viewers worldwide\, but her channel found its stride when she began posting videos about spooky lakes every October. Today she receives constant messages from teachers and parents thanking her for creating educational content that encourages kids to engage with science.

SUMMARY:Meet Brenda Novak in Kenosha!
DESCRIPTION:She left her hometown following a scandal—but family loyalty is dragging her back… \nJoin us on Thursday\, September 19th at 7 p.m. at the Blue House Books for a presentation and book signing with the author Brenda Novak as she celebrates the release of “The Banned Books Club”! To purchase tickets (book included) visit Brenda’s website: https://brendanovakstore.com/products/booktour. \nCopies of “The Banned Books Club” and other novels by the author will be available for purchase at the event or in advance at Blue House Books. \nABOUT THE BOOK: \nDespite their strained relationship\, when Gia Rossi’s sister\, Margot\, begs her to come home to Wakefield\, Iowa\, to help with their ailing mother\, Gia knows she has no choice. After her rebellious and at-times-tumultuous teen years\, Gia left town with little reason to look back. But she knows Margot’s borne the brunt of their mother’s care and now it’s Gia’s turn to help\, even if it means opening old wounds. \nAs expected\, Gia’s homecoming is far from welcome. There’s the Banned Books Club she started after the PTA overzealously slashed the high school reading list\, which is right where she left it. But there is also Mr. Hart\, her former favorite teacher. The one who was fired after Gia publicly and painfully accused him of sexual misconduct. The one who prompted Gia to leave behind a very conflicted town the minute she turned eighteen. The one person she hoped never to see again. \nWhen Margot leaves town without explanation\, Gia sees the cracks in her sister’s “perfect” life for the first time and plans to offer support. But as the town\, including members of the book club\, takes sides between Gia and Mr. Hart\, everything gets harder. Fortunately\, she learns that there are people she can depend on. And by standing up for the truth\, she finds love and a future in the town she thought had rejected her. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR: \nNew York Times bestselling author Brenda Novak has written over 80 novels. An eight-time Rita nominee\, she’s won The National Reader’s Choice\, The Bookseller’s Best and other awards. She runs Brenda Novak for the Cure\, a charity that has raised more than $2.5 million for diabetes research (her youngest son has this disease). She considers herself lucky to be a mother of five and married to the love of her life.

SUMMARY:BHB at the Spooky Market!
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Port of Film Fear Festival for their annual Spooky Market on Saturday\, September 14th between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.! We will be selling our favorite horror novels\, as well as other creepy goods and gifts. Christina Henry\, author of “Horseman” and “The House that Horror Built” will be joining us from 1 to 4 p.m. for a meet and greet with readers! \nABOUT CHRISTINA HENRY \nChristina Henry is a horror and dark fantasy author whose works include “Near the Bone”\, “The Ghost Tree”\, “Looking Glass”\, “The Girl in Red”\, “The Mermaid”\, “Lost Boy”\, “Alice”\, “Red Queen” and the seven-book urban fantasy Black Wings series. \nShe enjoys running long distances\, reading anything she can get her hands on and watching movies with samurai\, zombies and/or subtitles in her spare time. She lives in Chicago with her husband and son. \nABOUT THE HORSEMAN \nIn this atmospheric\, terrifying novel that draws strongly from “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow\,” the author of “Alice” and “The Girl in Red” works her trademark magic\, spinning an engaging and frightening new story from a classic tale. \nEveryone in Sleepy Hollow knows about the Horseman\, but no one really believes in him. Not even Ben Van Brunt’s grandfather\, Brom Bones\, who was there when it was said the Horseman chased the upstart Crane out of town. Brom says that’s just legend\, the village gossips talking. \nMore than thirty years after those storied events\, the village is a quiet place. Fourteen-year-old Ben loves to play “Sleepy Hollow boys\,” reenacting the events Brom once lived through. But then Ben and a friend stumble across the headless body of a child in the woods near the village\, and the discovery makes Ben question everything the adults in Sleepy Hollow have ever said. Could the Horseman be real after all? Or does something even more sinister stalk the woods? \nABOUT THE HOUSE THAT BUILT HORROR \nA single mother working in the gothic mansion of a reclusive horror director stumbles upon terrifying secrets in the captivating new novel from the national bestselling author of “Good Girls Don’t Die” and “Horseman”. \nHarry Adams has always loved horror movies\, so it’s not a total coincidence that she took the job cleaning house for movie director Javier Castillo. His forbidding graystone Chicago mansion\, Bright Horses\, is filled from top to bottom with terrifying props and costumes\, as well as glittering awards from his career making films that thrilled audiences—until family tragedy and scandal forced him to vanish from the industry. \nJavier values discretion\, and Harry has always tried to clean the house immaculately\, keep her head down\, and keep her job safe—she needs the money to support her son. But then she starts hearing noises from behind a locked door. Noises that sound remarkably like a human voice calling for help\, even though Javier lives alone and never has visitors. Harry knows that not asking questions is a vital part of working for Javier\, but she soon finds that the sinister house may be home to secrets she can’t ignore.

As a kid\, she knew two girls who had the exact same first\, middle\, and last names and shared the same birthday—only one year apart—and she always thought that was bizarre. \nAs an adult\, Haddix worked as a newspaper reporter and copy editor in Indiana before her first book\, “Running Out of Time”\, was published. She has since written more than forty books for kids and teens\, including the Greystone Secrets series\, the Shadow Children series\, the Missing series\, the Children of Exile series\, and lots of stand-alones. Haddix and her husband\, Doug\, now live in Columbus\, Ohio\, where they raised their two kids. You can learn more about her at haddixbooks.com. \nABOUT MYSTERIES OF TRASH AND TREASURE: “THE STOLEN KEY” \nNew York Times bestselling author Margaret Peterson Haddix delivers the thrilling conclusion to her middle grade Mysteries of Trash and Treasure series as Colin and Nevaeh unravel their most personal mystery yet. \nColin has spent all summer solving mysteries with his friend Nevaeh. But they’ve only ever dealt with other people’s mysteries—ones that are safe for Colin to think about. He’s still stuck on the mystery surrounding his own father\, who his mother refuses to talk about and he can’t remember meeting. \nThen one morning Colin finds a shoebox on his porch with a note on top: “Your father wanted you to have this.” Inside the box is a key. This new clue makes Colin even more determined to find out the truth about his dad and why his parents split up when he was a baby. Colin and Nevaeh begin investigating Colin’s father in a quest that takes them from eerie storage units to lock-lined bridges to\, strangely\, secrets in Nevaeh’s family. \nBut the closer they get to connecting the clues\, the more trouble awaits them. A serious accident leaves Nevaeh’s family reeling—and Nevaeh racked with guilt. And digging into Colin’s father’s past may lead Colin and his mom into even more danger. Can Colin and Nevaeh solve the mystery before it’s too late? \nABOUT LORELEI SAVARYN \nLorelei Savaryn is an author of magical stories for children\, including “The Night Train” releasing August 20th\, 2024. She holds a BA in creative writing and works in schools as an instructional coach. When she isn’t writing\, she spends her time amid the beautiful chaos of life with her husband and four children outside of Chicago. She is also the author of “The Edge of In Between” and “The Circus of Stolen Dreams”. You can find her online at LoreleiSavaryn.com and on Instagram @LoreleiSavaryn. \nABOUT THE NIGHT TRAIN \nMaddie Maverick likes to win. Whether it’s track team races or one-liners she delivers on her parents’ home renovation show\, Maddie knows that if she puts in the work\, she’ll always come out on top. But things take a turn when her ghost-hunting nana passes away\, and Maddie and her twin sister\, Nat\, discover that Nana left them an unexpected inheritance: They can now see ghosts just like she did. \nWhile Nat is totally on board to try to help some spirits find peace\, a ghostly calling is just not Maddie’s speed. So when history comes back to haunt their town\, and the story of a decades-old train crash rears its ugly head\, Maddie wants nothing to do with the ghosts of days long gone. But one ghost in particular won’t go away\, and Maddie might just be the only one with the power to help her—that is\, if she can survive the Night Train herself. \nIn this eerie tale by beloved author Lorelei Savaryn\, one girl’s determination to bring long-hidden secrets to light might just change her town—and herself—forever.
