SUMMARY:Transparent Watercolor Society of America Annual National Juried Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Paintings from transparent watercolor artists from across the country will be on display. Works include a wide variety of subjects from landscapes and portraits to abstracts. \nTransparent Watercolor Society of America is a national organization devoted to advancing the stature of transparent watercolor as a major expression and to foster its appreciation. \nAccording to TWSA: All watercolor pigments applied in a transparent manner allow light to penetrate the layers of glazes and reflect back through the pigments from the paper below. The whites are brilliant paper left unpainted. This light\, reflecting off the white of the paper\, makes the medium work. No white paint is accepted. Artists are required to preserve the white of the paper’s surface wherever a white statement is intended. Learn more about TWSA at www.watercolors.org.

SUMMARY:Meet & Greet with Daniel Stika
DESCRIPTION:Local author and veteran Daniel Stika will be at Blue House Books on Saturday\, June 17th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with his two local history books! \nAbout the Books \n“When Lincoln Met Wisconsin’s Nightingale”: Join author Daniel L. Stika as he examines the work of Wisconsin’s Nightingale\, Cordelia Harvey. As a tireless campaigner for improved medical care for Civil War soldiers\, Harvey inspects battlefield hospitals and takes her reports of squalor and death all the way to the White House. Throughout the course of several meetings with President Abraham Lincoln\, Harvey advocates for the construction of hospitals with the sole purpose of caring for the men who are fighting and dying for their country. \n“The Rhode Center for the Arts: Looking Back & Looking Ahead”: This book gives the reader a sequential overview of what “Entertainment Palaces” existed on the (Market Street – 56th street) property from 1890 to the present. The design and architecture of a theater can bring an audience to another period of time\, when men wore tuxedos and women wore gowns to the theater. \nAbout the Author \n“As a civic-minded citizen\, I think that we should all try to give something back to our communities. One of my main interests is in people. I enjoy being involved and helping whenever and wherever I can. My motto is that you will never outgrow your need for people and knowledge. Life itself is a lifelong learning process. When we stop learning\, we stop living. I retired from active employment\, not from active enjoyment.” –Daniel Stika\, local author

DESCRIPTION:The 1960 –1970 decade was a momentous time for the civil rights movement in the American South. SUMMARY:I AM A MAN: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement\, 1960–1970
DESCRIPTION:The 1960 –1970 decade was a momentous time for the civil rights movement in the American South. It was an historic decade that unleashed both hope for the future and profound change as public spaces were desegregated and as African Americans secured their right to vote. I AM A MAN: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement\, 1960–1970 displays a wide range of photographs taken by amateurs\, local photojournalists\, and internationally known photographers. Together\, they provide a vivid visual story of the evolution of the civil rights movement and shed light on the movement’s integration in the daily living in the American South.
