SUMMARY:Caring for the Great Lakes with Liz Sutton
DESCRIPTION:Do you know the scope of the plastic pollution in the Great Lakes? We are lucky enough to live on one of the largest freshwater sources in the world yet half of all plastic waste in the Great Lakes is in Lake Michigan. Learn about the problem of plastics in our own backyard and what we can do to help fix it. \nThe School of Freshwater Sciences at UW-Milwaukee is the first school in the nation dedicated solely to the study of freshwater and is a launch pad for critical and fascinating freshwater research. For more than 50 years\, the faculty and scientists have been conducting internationally recognized freshwater research across four essential themes: human and ecosystem health\, freshwater system dynamics\, freshwater technology\, and freshwater policy and economics.

SUMMARY:Juneau Black in Kenosha for the release of TWILIGHT FALLS
DESCRIPTION:Welcome back to the charming but dangerous world of Shady Hollow! \nFor the release of the next instalment of the Shady Hollow cozy mystery series\, Sharon Nagel of the Juneau Black writing duo will be at Blue House Books to talk about “Twilight Falls!” Joining Sharon is fellow writer of cute and murderous stories Amanda Flower\, author of the Farm-to-Table series. \nThe authors will be discussing how they successfully make death and crime so charming\, their writing process\, and how Juneau Black was able to make a story of woodland creatures such a hit! After the discussion\, they will take questions from the audience and sign books! \nThis event is free but registration is required as space is limited. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nThe fourth book in the Shady Hollow mystery series sees Vera embroiled in a case involving star-crossed lovers whose affair may have turned deadly. \nIt’s spring in Shady Hollow\, and romance is in the air. Even reporter Vera Vixen is caught up in the season as her relationship with new police chief Orville Braun blossoms. But true love is not always smooth sailing\, as two of the hollow’s young residents come to find. Jonah Atwater and Stasia von Beaverpelt find themselves battling their families in order to be together. And when Jonah’s father\, Shelby\, goes over the top of Twilight Falls\, all signs point to Stasia being the murderer. \nThe evidence against Stasia appears overwhelming\, and Orville arrests her. It looks like the case is closed\, but Vera isn’t so sure. There are almost too many clues indicating Stasia is the killer\, leading her to suspect someone is setting Stasia up. Besides\, what about the mysterious ghostly creature skulking around town at night? Maybe he or she was involved? As Vera investigates further\, her sleuthing puts her in direct opposition to Orville\, and soon she’s stirred up a hornet’s nest of trouble. \nABOUT JUNEAU BLACK \nJuneau Black is the pen name of authors Jocelyn Cole and Sharon Nagel. They share a love of excellent bookshops\, fine cheeses\, and a good murder (in fictional form only). Though they are two separate people\, if you ask either of them a question about their childhood\, you are likely to get the same answer. This is a little unnerving for any number of reasons. \nABOUT AMANDA FLOWER \nAmanda Flower is a USA Today bestselling and Agatha Award-winning author of over forty-five mystery novels. Her novels have received starred reviews from Library Journal\, Publishers Weekly\, and Romantic Times\, and she had been featured in USA Today\, First for Women\, and Woman’s World. Her first Emily Dickinson Mystery\, Because I Could Not Stop for Death\, was a Agatha Award winner and Mary Higgins Clark Nominee. She currently writes for Penguin-Random House (Berkley)\, Kensington\, and Sourcebooks. A former librarian\, Flower and her husband own a farm and recording studio\, and they live in Northeast Ohio with their eight adorable cats\, Editors Cheeps and Tummy and Studio Cats Cheddar\, Michelangelo\, Dr. Z\, Fender\, Marmalade\, Colby Jack.

SUMMARY:HOLY AMERICAN BURNOUT: Reading & Book Signing with Sean Enfield
DESCRIPTION:Let’s talk about the great American condition: burnout. \nLocal author Sean Enfield will be at Kenosha Creative Space on Wednesday\, December 13th from 7 to 9 p.m. to talk about his newly-published collection of essays “Holy American Burnout!\,” which weaves personal essay and cultural critique into the historical fabric of Black and bi-racial identity. \nJoining Sean are three other writers who will be sharing their own personal and cultural commentary through poetry\, essays\, and narrative stories. This event will be particularly relevant to teachers and students\, as Sean analyzes this growing trend of working to burnout through classroom narratives and his experiences as a teacher. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nSean Enfield delves into the great American condition: burnout. \nThreading his experiences both as a Texan student and later as a first-year teacher of predominately Muslim students at a Texas middle school\, Holy American Burnout! weaves personal essay and cultural critique into the historical fabric of Black and bi-racial identity. \nEnfield intersects examinations of which voices are granted legitimacy by virtue of school curriculum\, the complex relationship between basketball and education for Black and brown students\, his students’ burgeoning political consciousness during the 2016 presidential campaign\, and cultural figures ranging from Kendrick Lamar to Hamlet. \nThese classroom narratives weave around Enfield’s own formative experiences contending with a conflicted bi-racial family lineage\, reenacting the Middle Passage as the only Black student in his 7th grade history class\, and moshing in both Christian and secular hardcore pits. \nAs Enfield wrestles with the physical\, mental\, and emotional burdens that American society places on educators\, students\, and all relatively conscious minorities in this country\, he reaches for an education that better navigates our burnt-out empire. \nABOUT THE AUTHORS \nSean Enfield is an essayist\, poet\, gardener\, bassist\, and educator from Dallas\, TX. His writing attempts to find connection through music and words as reclamation of labor as community care and as resistance to the many forces of white supremacy working against marginalized bodies. You can find his work at seanenfield.com. \nLorna Pecard is a neurodivergent poet and essayist from Milwaukee. She received her MFA from Minnesota State University\, Mankato. You can find her reading in the sunroom or curled up somewhere. \nAngela Voras-Hills’s first collection of poems\, Louder Birds (Pleiades 2020)\, was awarded the Lena-Miles Wever Todd Poetry Prize. Her poetry and prose have appeared in Kenyon Review\, American Poetry Review\, Prairie Schooner\, Best New Poets\, and New Ohio Review\, among other journals and anthologies. She has received support from The Sustainable Arts Foundation\, Key West Literary Seminar\, and Writers’ Room of Boston. She lives with her family in Milwaukee\, WI\, where she is a PhD Student at UW-Milwaukee. \nAntonio Vargas-Nieto is a Mexican born writer\, teaching artist\, and emulsion enthusiast. He is a 2022-2023 Poetry Coalition Fellow and has been featured in Spectra\, Moody\, and Silver Operation. Antonio is based in Milwaukee\, WI.
